SUPPORT Act Expands Telehealth Treatment for Substance Use Disorders

The “SUPPORT Act” recently passed by Congress to expand prevention and treatment for opioid use disorder includes elements that encourage use of telehealth and telemedicine to enhance access.  In particular the Act eliminates geographic restrictions on reimbursement and directs the Attorney General to promulgate rules regarding a special telehealth registration to allow e-prescribing for buprenorphine currently barred as a controlled substance.
