Resources for Patients: Navigating Technology for Patients

Getting Comfortable with Telehealth Technology

You don't need to be a technology expert to use telehealth. Most visits can be completed using a smartphone, tablet, or computer. With a little preparation and practice, telehealth can be simple and convenient.

What You Need

To join a telehealth visit, you will typically need:

  • A device (smartphone, tablet, or computer)
  • A camera and microphone (usually built-in)
  • A reliable internet or Wi-Fi connection
  • A link or app provided by your healthcare provider

Step-by-Step: Joining a Telehealth Visit

  1. Open the link sent by your provider (email or text)
  2. Allow access to your camera and microphone if prompted
  3. Enter your name or required information
  4. Wait for your provider to join the visit

Tip: Try logging in 10 - 15 minutes early in case you need help.

Test Your Technology

Before your appointment, it's helpful to test your setup:

This tool allows you to check your camera, microphone, and internet connection ahead of time.

Common Technology Tips

  • Position your device at eye level so your provider can see you clearly
  • Use good lighting (facing a window or light source)
  • Reduce background noise
  • Close other apps to improve performance
  • Use headphones if you are having trouble hearing

Troubleshooting Common Issues

I can't hear or see my provider

  • Check your volume and speaker settings
  • Make sure your camera and microphone are turned on

My video is freezing or cutting out

  • Move closer to your Wi-Fi router
  • Turn off other devices using the internet

The link isn't working

  • Try opening it in a different browser (Chrome or Safari often works best)
  • Contact your provider's office for assistance

I feel unsure about using the technology

  • Ask a family member, caregiver, or clinic staff for help
  • Many organizations offer free digital skills training (see below)
